Multimeter and tools for a quick charging system check

A two minute charging check at every return

A machine that comes back with a weak alternator will strand the next customer. A two minute check at return inspection catches most of them.

  1. With the engine off, a healthy 12 volt battery reads about 12.6 volts.
  2. Start the engine and raise the speed a little. A working 12 volt charging system reads about 13.8 to 14.4 volts at the battery. Double these for 24 volts.
  3. Below that, check the belt and connections, then the alternator.
  4. Well above that, the regulator may be overcharging and cooking the battery.

Log the readings with the unit number so repeat problems stand out.
